Bookmark representing a young Russian girl with a plait
The saying goes: “A plait is a girl’s beauty”. Slavic nations have always regarded a plait as a sign of virginity. Unmarried young girls wore a single plait interwoven with a ribbon. A ribbon, head band, wreath or small tiara-like head-dress were also permitted.
A belt that was worn to fend off evil spirits was a mandatory element of the costume. The idiomatic expression “raspoyasatsia” (lit. to loosen or take off a belt) meant to violate the norms of morality.
