At Whitsun young girls and young women would sing and dance in a ring. Girls of a marriageable age were wearing their best dresses made and decorated by themselves. An unspoken contest for the best costume was taking place, and the “competition panel” consisted of countless spectators from the same village or even from neighbouring ones, as the audience included potential bridegrooms and mothers-in-law; for this reason would-be wives put all their skill and soul in the making of the dress. They put pretty wreaths on their heads decorated with silk ribbons and wore silk sarafan dresses embroidered in gold thread, lace aprons and beautiful belts.
